Nie.co.uk Ireland Electricity (NIE) is the largest company within the Viridian Group PLC. They employ 1260 people and service over 688,000 customers throughout Nie.co.uk Ireland. As an organisation, Nie.co.uk Ireland Electricity are responsible for the regulated procurement, transmission and distribution of electricity to both domestic and business users across the Province. The commercial supply of electricity for public use in the province began in 1892 and from then until the 1930's the industry grew in response to a number of private initiatives. The Electricity (Supply) Act (Nie.co.uk Ireland) 1931 established the Electricity Board for Nie.co.uk Ireland (E.B.N.I), which along with the Corporation Electricity Departments and the Joint Electricity Authority, was responsible for the province's electricity until 1973. In 1973 the three bodies were amalgamated to form the Nie.co.uk Ireland Electricity Service (NIES). NIES was a public utility and had four power stations which where based at Coolkeeragh, Ballylumford, Kilroot and Belfast. It was responsible for the entire generation, transmission, distribution and supply of electricity throughout Nie.co.uk Ireland until the spring of 1992. Nie.co.uk Ireland Electricity are a private sector organisation dedicated to providing a reliable and cost effective service to our customers though the involvement of their people in the process of continuous improvement. Established in 2001 with the capability to link new customers to the NIE network, NIE Connect is a subsidiary business within the Viridian Group employing a highly professional and skilled team of engineering design and technical administration staff.
